POSITION: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

DEPARTMENT: Orthopedic Clinic

FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT

SCHEDULE: MONDAY-FRIDAY, 8AM-5PM, Occasional travel to Rayville to provide Ortho services. 

JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for assisting physicians with patient care, scheduling appointments, triaging clinic calls, prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations. Perform clinical tasks that may include performing blood draws and hospital admissions for patients.

Responsible for accurate and complete documentation of information in the medical record. Provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from clinic services.  Conveys a positive image of the clinic.

JOB RELATIONSHIPS:

Responsible to: Director of Orthopedic Clinic

Positions Directly Supervised: None

Regular Contact with all clinic staff, hospital staff, physicians, patients, and patient family members.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Understands rules, regulations of Franklin Medical Center. Complies with established policies and procedures. 
  2. Maintains a good attendance record and current health record. Always notifies director if ill or cannot come in. Knows repeated absenteeism is reason for dismissal. 
  3. Attends in-service (includes fire and safety), scheduled staff meetings, seminars when required. BLS update. 
  4. Maintains confidentiality of all information regarding employees, patients, medical staff, hospital business, etc.
  5. Follows infection control protocols.
  6. Reports all unsafe/hazardous conditions, defective equipment, etc. to supervisor immediately.
  7. Performs various functions on computer as necessary.
  8. Clean rooms in between patients.
  9. Ensures supplies have been replenished in work areas and exam rooms as necessary.
  10. Orders supplies from purchasing and pharmacy when necessary.
  11. Organize and maintain patient charts (filing and proper documentation)
  12. Processes orthopedic clinic referrals and surgical clearances in a timely manner.
  13. Liaise with the orthopedist in booking patients’ appointments in line with their schedule to facilitate smooth flow of operations.
  14. Triage patients (verifies patient information, medical history, allergies, and purpose of visit).
  15. Obtains and records patient's vital signs, weight, blood pressure, height and temperature.
  16. Prepares patients for examinations, escorts them to treatment rooms. Remains present during examinations/treatments, assisting the physician in treatments and procedures.
  17. Competent in suture removal, staple removal, casting, and minor wound care.
  18. Provides care as directed, including but not limited to, obtaining blood specimens, dressing wounds, medication injection administration, and other requested duties.
  19. Demonstrates all orthopedic clinic products for proper use to the patient.
  20. Reviews physician's orders, lab requests, or follow-up needs with patient.
  21. Responds to patient telephone inquiries timely and professionally.
  22. Schedules appointments timely.
  23. Forwards clinic notes to patient’s referring provider, timely.
  24. Follows up with patients on test results, including the scheduling of any additional tests, timely.
  25. Perform all other duties as assigned with promptness.
  26. In addition to following hospital policies and procedures, does whatever it takes to get his/her job done as long as it is legal, ethical, and moral

QUALIFICATION:

Education and Training:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, AND
  • Graduate of an LPN program, license active an unrestricted
  • Up to date BLS

Work Experience:    

  • At least one (1) year of experience preferred, but not required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of computers and office equipment
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Understanding and considerate to the patients’ needs
  • Good communication and phone skills
  • Possess the ability to be flexible
  • Team player

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must present a positive and pleasant attitude
  • Lift weight over 25 lbs. (e.g., lifting and moving or helping to lift patients of awkward weights, moving and carrying equipment)                                
  • Repeated bending, stooping, squatting, and occasional pushing and pulling movements
  • Prolonged walking and standing
  • Frequent interruptions
  • Visual and hearing acuity as well as cognitive function to make observations and communicate these to other staff

OSHA EXPOSURE CATEGORY:  A – has the potential to be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.
