DEPARTMENT:                    RURAL HEALTH CLINIC

JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for efficiently and accurately obtaining and preparing specimens for analysis and performing various screening tests.

JOB RELATIONSHIPS:
            Responsible to: Rural Health Clinic Director
            Positions Directly Supervised: None
            Regular Contact with: All Hospital departments, Physicians, and the public

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  1. Serves patients by identifying the best method for retrieving blood samples and other specimens, preparing specimens for laboratory testing, and performing screening procedures.
  2. Obtains blood specimens and collects nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing.
  3. Verifies patient identification and explains sampling procedures to patients.
  4. Reassures patients who are nervous about sampling procedures and applies dressings to wounds created by blood draws.
  5. Prepares specimens and delivers them to appropriate locations for testing.
  6. Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, and observing isolation procedures.
  7. Verifies test requisitions and bring discrepancies to the attention of applicable personnel.
  8. Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, nursing staff, or reference laboratory, referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification, and notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.
  9. Retrieves lab results and enters them into proper patient charts to be reviewed by the provider.
  10. Maintains a safe, secure, clean, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
  11. Ensures that the clinic’s phlebotomy supplies and equipment are well-organized and maintained
  12. Reports all unsafe/hazardous conditions, defective equipment, etc. to the supervisor immediately
  13. Adheres to strict infection control and safety guidelines
  14. Understands rules and regulations set forth by Franklin Medical Center. Maintains a good working relationship with fellow employees, physicians, and patients.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:    High school diploma or equivalent is required.  Phlebotomy certification preferred.

Work Experience:   Phlebotomy experience desirable. Clinic or hospital experience desired.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR)
  • Proficiency in venipuncture and other blood collection techniques
  • Interpersonal skills and compassion
  • Analyzing information, critical thinking, and problem solving
  • Attention to detail to ensure accuracy
  • Compassion, courtesy, and the ability to calm patients during blood collection
  • Basic computer skills
           
Physical Requirements: 
  • Remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time
  • Occasionally move about the office and facility campus to access various departments and patient care areas.
  • Constantly position self, such as bending or stooping to maintain equipment and provide patient care
  • Constantly operates a computer, office and Lab machinery
  • Ability to communicate information accurately so others will understand.
  • Ability to observe details at close range.
  • Frequently move boxes, equipment, etc. weighing up to 20 pounds across office for various needs.
