POSITION: DIRECTOR OF SURGERY – Registered Nurse
DEPARTMENT: SURGERY
FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT
Keeps Director of Nurses and Administrator informed of department needs, conditions of equipment and facilities, legal aspects of surgery procedures, policy violations. Meets with Director of Nurses and Administrator to discuss departmental objectives, budget, and major purchase priorities, management problems, policies and procedures.
Capable of performing RN duties in other departments. Complies with established policies and procedures and nursing standards in hospital.
Maintains and helps develop good employee relationships in department, hospital, and public. Seeks staff cooperation. Meets with floor nurse. Consults with other departments.
Participates on hospital committees and projects and public relations. Serves on continuous Quality Improvement Committee assisting with infection control. Serves on various nursing service committees.
Keeps up-to-date in field of surgical nursing. Conducts and attends in-service meetings in department. CPR, ACLS, PALS updated.
Plans, directs, and supervises functions, activities, and personnel of OR. Establishes standards, written policies, procedures, and job descriptions. Completes schedules and time cards. Provides essential equipment and supplies. Maintains compliance with established principles and policies through inspection and observation.
Maintains Department records and files. Inspects for completion.
Takes night and weekend call as scheduled.
Uses established hospital and nursing hierarchical structure for problems and grievances. Follows procedures and policy. Uses chart of organization established by the hospital.
Complies with hospital. Uses established hospital policy.
Reliable in attendance. Follows hospital policy concerning time clock, sick time, vacation time, and is punctual.
Protects patient’s rights. Maintains confidentiality of patient information and patient privacy.
Assists in total patient care within the OR suite. Circulating and servicing as scrub nurse as necessary.
Assists in other areas when not needed in OR.
Responsible to: Director of Nursing
Positions Directly Supervised: RNPs, LPNs, SURGICAL TECHs, CNAs
Regular Contact with: All hospital departments, physicians, APRNs, and the public.
QUALIFICATIONS:Education and Training: Graduate of accredited school of nursing and registered and licensed to practice in the state of Louisiana. Up to date CPR, ACLS and PALS preferred.
Work Experience: Management or supervisory experience preferred or two years experience as an OR staff nurse.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Ability to tolerate high levels of stress. Ability to get along with fellow employees on basis of fair and impartial treatment.
