JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for efficiently and accurately obtaining and preparing specimens for analysis and performing various screening tests.

JOB RELATIONSHIPS:
            Responsible to: Clinic Manager
            Positions Directly Supervised: None
            Regular Contact with: All Hospital departments, Physicians, and the public

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Serves patients by identifying the best method for retrieving blood samples and other specimens, preparing specimens for laboratory testing, and performing screening procedures.
Obtains blood specimens and collects nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing.
Verifies patient identification and explains sampling procedures to patients.
Reassures patients who are nervous about sampling procedures and applies dressings to wounds created by blood draws.
Prepares specimens and delivers them to appropriate locations for testing.
Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, and observing isolation procedures.
Verifies test requisitions and bring discrepancies to the attention of applicable personnel.
Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, nursing staff, or reference laboratory, referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification, and notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.
Retrieves lab results and enters them into proper patient charts to be reviewed by the provider.
Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
Understands rules and regulations set forth by Franklin Medical Center. Maintains a good working relationship with fellow employees, physicians, and patients.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Phlebotomy certification preferred.

Work Experience: Phlebotomy experience desirable. Clinic or hospital experience desired.

Basic computer skills

Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift, move, or carry certain equipment. Ability to move or support patients. Must be able to bend and squat. Prolonged walking and standing. Ability at times to tolerate high levels of stress. Ability to get along with fellow employees on the basis of fair and impartial treatment.

OSHA EXPOSURE CLASS A: EMPLOYEES IN THIS JOB CLASSIFICATION HAVE EXPOSURE TO BLOOD-BORNE PATHOGENS.
